The right local partner is defined by the work that needs to be done, the responsibility they can carry and the incentive they have to stay involved.

This is a working outline for a future Proteka Advisory article. It identifies the practical questions the completed article will answer.

1. Define the role before searching

A distributor, technical operator, project developer and relationship builder solve different problems. A clear role prevents a familiar name or promising introduction from becoming the only selection criterion.

Questions to develop
  • What must the partner own locally?
  • Which capabilities should remain with the Japanese team?

2. Assess capability and incentives

A suitable partner needs the people, access and operating capacity to perform the role. The opportunity must also be important enough to receive consistent attention.

Questions to develop
  • What evidence shows the partner can deliver?
  • How does the opportunity fit its current business?

3. Test how the teams work together

A small shared task can reveal communication habits, response speed and the quality of follow-up before either side makes a larger commitment.

Questions to develop
  • Can both teams resolve uncertainty openly?
  • Who records decisions and follows up actions?

4. Document roles and review points

Commercial terms matter, but operating responsibilities matter just as much. Record ownership, decision rights, costs and the conditions for continuing or changing the relationship.

Questions to develop
  • Who owns each customer and delivery activity?
  • When will both teams review the arrangement?
