UNEP’s Global Waste Management Outlook 2024 examines waste management through the waste hierarchy, including prevention and resource recovery. For a new project, this is a useful starting point: consider how materials can retain value before assuming that a particular treatment technology is the answer.

Our view is that a waste-management proposal should begin with a material-flow map. What arrives, in what condition and how consistently? Who collects and sorts it, and who will buy the recovered output? Existing collectors and local operators should be included in the conversation. Their knowledge can reveal constraints that a machinery specification does not capture.
A practical starting point
An SME pilot could measure contamination, usable yield, collection costs and buyer acceptance for a defined material stream. Confirm site permissions and environmental requirements with qualified local advisers. A viable project needs dependable inputs, responsible handling of residual waste and a commercial arrangement that works for the people running the system.
